Each thing on its own is not exactly safe, but has manageable consequences. A basement bar. Sparklers. Alcohol. New Year. Together, the risk factor multiplies, and sadly, hundreds of people found that out. The more I read, the less I want to know about the obvious issues that caused this incident.

The causes of the disaster are obvious. Cutting corners on safety standards, presumably to save money. No risk assessment - who on earth thought that lighting sparklers indoors was a good idea? We were always taught all fireworks were for outside - and a climate in which “health and safety has gone mad” turns into “let’s not worry, eh, it’ll be fine”, right up until real people are killed and injured following a series of failings and an attitude of “no one saw this coming”. They will say “lessons will be learned”, but will they and will real change follow? Just look at Grenfell.

Those poor, poor people. My heart breaks 💔

Welcome to 2026. Giving off much the same vibes as 2025.

The Daily Telegraph Newspaper of the year? Got the traditional chip shop vote then?
